Weird Wednesday: SWAT Team Called on Call of Duty Player

While most of us are content to simply ignore those "Uv bin h@cked" messaged we get on XBL, perhaps it is time we begin to take take some of them seriously. That's a tough lesson one family learned after the SWAT team was called to their house Monday evening.

It probably started as a fairly common day for the teenage boy. He was playing Call of Duty: Black Ops on his Xbox 360, when a voice entered the chat and stated that he was going to hack the Lewisville resident and call the SWAT team over.

Like most of us, he ignored the message as a rather silly bluff. 20 minutes later, however, an AT&T Instant Message Relay Service called the Lewisville police stating that someone at the teenage boy's house had been shot and someone was still inside shooting.

The boy was still playing the game when he heard his name being shouted into a bull horn outside his house. The police were calling for the family to come out, unwilling to enter immediately because of the lack of evidence of a shooting. The family opened the door, saw the police, then quickly ran into the bedroom to hide as the boy's mother called 9-1-1 to sort out what the heck was going on.

According to CBS, the police are still looking into the prank to try and figure out how this happened.

Could this mean more people are being hacked than we suspect? Probably not. It might just be an incredible case of social engineering: Perhaps a hint in the boy's XBL profile indicated the town he lives in and/or his name, then with social media the way it is, the prankster probably wouldn't have that hard of a time tracking down a general whereabouts.

This is especially true if the boy used the same handle across multiple social sites like Twitter, AIM, PSN, etc. We all leave small little clues everywhere these days. Perhaps the boy's password was something simple like 123456 or password or something like that.

Either way, this is a rather amusing case of a player taking things too far. Perhaps it was meant as a silly prank, or perhaps he just didn't like the boy, but either way it was expensive, wrong, and in the third person hilarious.
