I am going to be perfectly serious. When I first saw the following trailer, I thought this was going to be a Lord of the Rings brawler. I then had very mixed feelings. On one hand, I would LOVE to lay the smack down on Gollum as Gimli. On the other... it's a brawler set in the LOTR universe. There would be no way it could be good.
Well, it's not a brawler. You aren't in an arena, and it isn't quite the deathmatch I was expecting. The gameplay is actually much more similar to Defense of the Ancients or League of Legends from what I can tell. It's both a negative and a positive. On the one hand, the game isn't going to be particularly good. It's based off the film Lord of the Rings trilogy judging by the art assets, so it's possibly trying to draw in some positive attention in time for The Hobbit trilogy. It's also probably making sure New Line Cinema retains control over the video game rights to the property by actively demonstrating the fact that it's in use.
On the plus side, it shows that this genre of game is strong enough and important enough to get generic, bland games. It's sort of the ultimate goal of any genre creator, as imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
Guardians of Middle Earth was developed by Monolith Productions and is set to release in the Fall of this year for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
